UST Law students Leadership Training Seminar 2011 (Day 2)

April 12, 2011. (Another photo dump here, sorry, there’s more than 120 pictures). It was the second day of our LTS (leadership training seminar) in the the Forest Club resort in Bay, Laguna. The whole day was reserved for games and other team-building activities facilitated by the resort’s employees (the games are part of the package, together with the accommodations and all the meals). There were obstacle courses and other forms of races over tree trunks, bamboo poles, ropes and ponds.

I was supposed to participate in all the team-building games and activities but shamefully and clumsily injured myself during the very first game, so I ended up being everyone’s photographer instead.

Other than the games, there were also small-group planning conferences among the students, and talks by persons from the university administration. The end of the day was spent at the pool and over drinks (brought in by and with consent of the professors/advisers).

UST Law students Leadership Training Seminar 2011 (Day 1)

(Sorry, this is going to be a big photo dump). Last week, I went on a three-day ‘leadership training seminar’ (LTS) for UST (University of Santo Tomas) Law student leaders, being a part of the student council this year. Other participants include heads of the bar operations committee, and representatives and heads of various organizations, student publications, fraternities and sororities in UST Law.

The first day, April 11, 2011 was held at the UST campus, which began with a mass. It was followed by a talk by Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares as regards the role of young law students and aspiring lawyers in social change in the context of Philippine social conditions. A student member of the National Union of People’s Lawyers spoke afterwards and emphasized on the points raised by Cong. Neri. The rest of the day was spent on team-building activities.

In the evening, the group proceeded to the Forest Club resort in Bay, Laguna for the rest of the LTS activities.

It was my brother’s turn to graduate. The UST College of Architecture’s graduation rites were held at Plaza Mayor in front of the historic Main Building. I had an exam that day, so I just proceeded to the graduation rites after I finished answering the test.

It was quite a long ceremony but the atmosphere was great. Beautiful setting, cool late afternoon and evening breeze, and to cap the rites off, a grand fireworks display the could match a New Year’s fireworks show in Makati.

We had dinner with some relatives and family friends afterwards.

As a member of the student council, I helped out at the graduation rites of the Faculty of Civil Law’s seniors class. Then I went off to the usual McDonald’s store along Quezon Avenue for an all-nighter study group with some classmates.

The last lecture day before our final exams weeks was on a Saturday. We usually only have one morning class on Saturdays, but that day we were in school till late afternoon for a make-up class. We had packed tosilog meals in the morning and pizza in the afternoon to mark the end of our first year lectures.

By the way, I just noticed–doodles on the board are not by our professors, nor by us law students. They are probably drawn by Pharmacy students who use the classrooms during weekday mornings.

That afternoon, I received a text message from one of my classmates, “Menu for tonight: sweet and sour pork, rellenong bangus, fish and tofu, steamed fish and pancit canton.” Wow, a fiesta? Usually for our last lecture days with our professors, we just order pizza. That night, it was different. (We chip in for the class fund, by the way).

It was the last week of lecture classes for the second semester of our first year in law school. By tradition, we have something special on our last day of lecture class for most of our professors. On Tuesday, we had some sushi in class right after our last lecture in Criminal Law 2.

Earlier, Mong took me to the congressmen’s lounge to have late lunch. He regularly takes one of his staff to the lounge each day to take part of the ‘free buffet’ for congressmen. But we have to wait till 3 PM. I also bumped into Congressman Socrates of Palawan, who is a senior fraternity brother.

“They want a ceasefire, for the NPA to lay down their arms. Bakit, may ceasefire ba ang mga landlord? May ceasefire ba ang minimum wage?” Fidel Agcaoili said. On the other hand, he said that the NDF is offering a truce, not merely a ceasefire, on the simple condition that the ruling Government subscribe to a patriotic social justice agenda which includes, among others, the implementation of genuine agrarian reform, national industrialization, and the assertion of national sovereignty against imperialism. A signature can bring about a truce, the ruling Government’s refusal only exposes its true character, he added.

After class, at around half past 9 PM, we decided to have late dinner at Army Navy’s along Tomas Morato. I was intrigued because, earlier, my seatmate in class brought in a big ass burger and tasty shoestring fries from Army Navy which he finished in a few minutes just before lecture started. When I tried it myself later that night, it turned out to be just fancy fastfood, nothing I would really crave for in the future. The basic classic burger costs P130.

I have often thought of starting a small blog project, documenting all the eateries and restaurants around UST, and within Sampaloc, Manila and its vicinity, that my classmates and I eat at after class in the evenings on weekdays. I would even include those places we stop by along the way to Quezon City, when I was still taking a car every night to and from school with some carpool buddies. It’s just that we don’t eat out that often, anymore, because suddenly we’re all a bunch of spendthrifts because of all the price hikes.

We’re nearing our final examinations, and the end of our first year in law school. Well, for me, it’s my second end of first year.
